I’m lucky enough to have some great friends who live in Maui. I would honestly hitchhike to Missouri to visit these people, but they’ve made it extra easy on me by living in an amazing tropical beauty-scape.
While I love the beach, I’m not really designed for it. I burn easily and am attracted to shade. I work in a low-light room doing web layouts all day and am statistically more likely to be inspired by an artist’s rendering of a beach than by the beach itself… Eventhough my desk is about two blocks from the Pacific Ocean. Oh - and I’m ok with that.
So it is with this self acceptance that on my vacation I journeyed inland from the beaches of Maui and looked for the expressions and visual tokens of people who need to build a life and career first and hit the beach second… or third.

(It’s a Flash slideshow… sorry iPhones).
On a technical note, these photos are shot on Fuji Provia iso100 color reversal film processed in C-41 chemicals. See “cross processed” or the slang “x-pro”. I have some digital photos as well which I’ll post in a separate slide show.
Aloha.

Comments:
These pictures are incredible, Tad! I’d love to hear more about the “cross processing”. It gives it such an authentic and almost vintage look.
Do you cross process them yourself? Or are there shops that do it?
Nice work!!!
Thanks Brendan. I leave the developing to a specialist. I don’t think Costco or Walgreen’s would do cross processing, but if you go to more of a pro developer they’ll know what to do. For example I got these developed at Color Services on Cota in SB.

Just remember to start off by taking photos with E6 (slide) film. Then just ask for Cross Processing.
Great Pics! It’s not your stereotypical Hawaii photo album and I love that. The fact that Tasty Crust (my favorite breakfast joint ever) is in the album makes my day!
Tad, you are a vintage master! I love these shots… makes me feel like I’ve been transported back a few decades to the old island vibes. Glad to see Maui still has some non-modern vibes. Hope you didn’t get too burned in the sun =)
These pictures remind me of Havana, it has a old world feel with new world vibes. Oh and by the way i’ve never been to Cuba, but I definitely want to go to Maui now.
TBone - Nice work! Totally reminds me of visiting my dad there in the 80’s. You are gifted at this!
Thanks for the comments everyone.
Stressed workers still need time to read, to chat over coffee, Gold Coast Accommodationto walk along the beach, to linger over meals, to philosophize into the night. Even more fundamentally, human beings need to keep in touch with the seasons.
