“Turning Live Music on the Web into a Hot Ticket”

“For the fans live music on the web offers not only access to their favorite bands and the opportunity to catch shows they can’t make in person, but also a fully rounded social experience, as broadcasters now fully integrate streams with social media… It gives people a taste of what’s happening. Plus, live music on the web offers new revenue streams to the music industry.

It’s not just about broadcasting a live concert, but making the tour, the album, the videos all part of a cohesive strategy for the band and the audience. It’s about using all the mediums and bringing them together… It’s about creating experiences, marketing them—and making them participatory. That’s when you can see this thing really having meaning.”

Brendan: Not a chance in hell I would pay $20 to watch a concert online.  What is this guy thinking?

Ed: Yep, but if there was some bad ass, free, good quality streaming, live concert with ads and a chance to buy merch I might be willing to buy something.

Jacob: I would do it under the perfect circumstances, but not more than once or twice a year probably.

Jimmy: I think they’re definitely on to something.  The question is - can they do it right?  If they can do it right, super fans (and probably regular fans) would be into it.

I liked this quote, as it’s what we do at Oniracom:

“It’s not just about broadcasting a live concert, but making the tour, the album, the videos all part of a cohesive strategy for the band and the audience. It’s about using all the mediums and bringing them together.

Brendan: Local Natives are streaming a live concert off their facebook page right now.  And no one is watching.

Sean: If Ticketmaster is involved, then no, they can’t do it right.

I seem to remember online concerts being the next big thing on second life for about 30 seconds.

Jacob: I agree Sean.  Nobody has properly engaged the alternative reality environments like 2nd Life (yet).

There’s tons of money to be made there—just look at World of Warcraft and the video game sweat shops:

Now imagine if the products being sold in these virtual environments were actually something humans would pay to see on other mediums like live video concerts….  as opposed to virtual bars of gold.

Sean: Maybe it needs to be a guitar hero mashup?  Play along with your favorite band live?  Winner of some contest gets to pick the setlist?  something more interactive than watching the computer screen, or Retina display, as the case may be.

Tyler: I’m all for that idea.
