Oops! (The Topspin Model)

POSTED AT 05:11 PM

I’m actually a fan of Topspin Media, but when signing up for their mailing list recently, I found something in the process that was humorous coming from a technology company for “direct-to-fan marketing, management, and distribution.”  Check it out….

Step One: Confirmation Email

Step Two: Click on the Confirm and Download link.  It takes you here:

Step Three: Click Download Now and…. Oops! Hopefully this doesn’t happen after I sign an artist for the service…

Maui ‘09 - Part One

Author: tbone
POSTED AT 04:11 PM

I’m lucky enough to have some great friends who live in Maui.  I would honestly hitchhike to Missouri to visit these people, but they’ve made it extra easy on me by living in an amazing tropical beauty-scape.

While I love the beach, I’m not really designed for it. I burn easily and am attracted to shade.  I work in a low-light room doing web layouts all day and am statistically more likely to be inspired by an artist’s rendering of a beach than by the beach itself… Eventhough my desk is about two blocks from the Pacific Ocean.  Oh - and I’m ok with that.

So it is with this self acceptance that on my vacation I journeyed inland from the beaches of Maui and looked for the expressions and visual tokens of people who need to build a life and career first and hit the beach second… or third.

Click here to see the full slide show.
(It’s a Flash slideshow… sorry iPhones).

On a technical note, these photos are shot on Fuji Provia iso100 color reversal film processed in C-41 chemicals.  See “cross processed” or the slang “x-pro”. I have some digital photos as well which I’ll post in a separate slide show.

Aloha.

Last week Oniric Records took Matthew McAvene into Sjoko’s studio here in Santa Barbara to record electric bass, string upright bass and backing vocal tracks to his masterpiece “Super Hero Dreams.”  This track is inspired by his true love and boasts more than ever McAvene’s musical craftsmanship in the studio.  Matthew is donating “Super Hero Dreams” to Oniric Records’ “Solutions for Dreamers : Season 3” compilation CD, benefiting the Wailer’s non-profit I Went Hungry.  We are very honored and excited to share this beautiful musical journey with the world.

From the Basement

Author: drew
POSTED AT 08:11 PM

From the Basement is an amazing series of videos created by producer, engineer, and recent Thom Yorke bandmate Nigel Godrich. I have taken the liberty to watch pretty much all of the videos. Besides the videos you know you should see1, white denim was a band I hadn’t heard of, but is worth a watch. Their drummer is incredible, and their sound is familiar, but yet different. I don’t think that is even possible.

What makes From the Basement unique is that it takes a trend I have been seeing lately and gives it amazing production value. That trend is studios putting out video podcasts of artists who record there. Chasing the Moon is another great site that showcases San Franciscan artists. This is smart because we all know that studios are struggling from the availability of home recording equipment. This allows for studios to utilize the internet to have an audience. Studios could offer to make the video for free as a promotional incentive for bands, as long as the band agreed to being in the podcast. If the band liked it enough, and wanted to use it as a official video then some sort of fee could be in place to recoup the costs.

  1. If you want to know the other videos you should watch, ask and I will put them in the comments.↩

A lighter.

3.  How long have you and Marc been playing together?

Marc and I have been playing together for some months, hopefully many more to come.

4.  Most Life-Changing Music Moment?

Hmmm… I would have to say it was when I was about 7 years old. My dad took me to see…

I am an image addict, I search and peruse and hunt all day long.  It’s quite fun to see what all is out there on the internet, but at times it can be a bit disappointing.  Here is one discovery I made not so long ago.

My time as an intern with Oniracom

Author: jacobtell
POSTED AT 03:11 AM

One of our summer 2009 interns, Karen Kiley, enjoyed her experience working at Oniracom and wrote up a nice post about her experience.  Karen is now back at the University of Limerick in Ireland.  We wish her the best with her career path.

This summer, I spent three months working as a social media intern with a company called Oniracom/Oniric Records. The company, based in Santa Barbara, California, creates online presences for a number of big name musicians. They also specialize in the websites and social media of some entertainment and environmental companies. The record label Oniric Records manage some local Santa Barbara acts.

Oniric Records artist Marc B. has been in the studio the past two days in Montecito recording with legendary producer Sjoko Koppert (The Who, Pink Floyd, ABBA, Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa, Beach Boys, Doobie’s, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yes, Rod Stewart, etc, etc). They are recording a track for our compilation CD Solutions for Dreamers : Season 3, which will also feature tracks from The Wailers, Matthew McAvene, and a whole host of other amazing artists!

Here are a couple shots I snapped of Marc and his accomplished percussionist Maxx Farris in the studio with Sjoko yesterday.

Traditional 80’s fast food Marketing is back!  For better or worse…

A Business market segment is a group of people or organizations sharing one or more characteristics that cause them to have similar product and/or service needs.

In this case, Burger King and Microsoft have teamed up pushing the “Windows 7 Whopper” to their market segment (very very hungry and/or large people in Japan).  For 7 days only, you can shell out Â¥777 (or $8.55) for 7 beef patties on a sesame seed bun, in support of Windows 7.  BK’s in Japan are limiting this price to the first 30 customers each day, upping the price to Â¥1,450 ($17.10), officially breaking the “7” theme.

But this campaign has pushed beyond the limits of traditional marketing into the digital realm.  Yes, blogs all over the web have picked up on this story (including our own SFDBlog.com).

For blog publishers to resist re-posting this image is nearly impossible.  It has all the necessary elements: two American company logos, Japanese characters and 7 mouthwatering beef patties.

But I would like to give a huge thank you to Gizmodo’s Mark Wilson & co. who attempt to down this burger for Generation YouTube to “enjoy.”

This event featured guest speakers Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jean-Michel Cousteau & Hillary Hauser. Fine artist Matthew McAvene provided us his Fabulous Fish Puppet Show.

Oniric Records produced the music portion of the night, featuring Culver City Dub Collective and The Black Seeds who played until The Coral Casino in Santa Barbara kicked us out.
