When Are Facebook Users Most Active?

Author: jimmy
POSTED AT 05:10 PM

At Oniracom we do a lot of news/blog post for our clients.  Whether it’s a cool interview, a new music video, tour announcement, etc - we need to make sure our artists’ audience is receiving the info we’re giving them.

Over time (and millions of blog posts) we have learned that certain days and times in the day are better to post news than others.  It makes total sense and is more often than not overlooked.  A new study by Social media management company Virtrue further proves this.  Virtrue conducted a study to determine when facebook users are most active.

Some of the highlights of this study include:

  • The three biggest usage spikes tend to occur on weekdays at 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. ET.
  • The biggest spike occurs at 3:00 p.m. ET on weekdays.
  • Weekday usage is pretty steady, however Wednesday at 3:00 pm ET is consistently the busiest period.
  • Fans are less active on Sunday compared to all other days of the week.

Oniracom created a fun little campaign to promote Jack Johnson’s new music video “At Or With Me”.  In the music video, Jack Johnson and Andy Samberg get into a minor slugfest.

Oniracom created a splash page that featured a teaser for the music video and also the ability for fans to “place bets” on who they think will win.  In order to place the bet, you simply click on the like button.  The like appears in the Facebook news feed - creating BUZZ.

This is only Phase 1 of the campaign.  Stay tuned for Phase 2!

Around June 19th of 2009, Beck announced that he was starting an experiment called Record Club.

For those who are unaware, the purpose of this project is to cover an entire album by another artist in one day.  Taken from the Record Club page - “The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework.  Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time.  The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering.  There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording.”

Beck employs a diverse group of musicians to help him out with each project.  Notable musicians in the past have included MGMT, Wilco, Wolfmother, Sonic Youth, and many more.  The albums that have been covered have been very eclectic indeed - The Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground and Nico, Leonard Cohen’s Songs of Leonard Cohen, Skip Spence’s Oar, INXS’s Kick and most recently Yanni’s Yanni Live at the Acropolis

Today, I’ll compare the most recent cover from Yanni Live at the Acropolis - Yanni’s “Santorini” vs. the Record Club “Santorini” version.  I’m actually not going to do any comparing myself but simply posting the two videos side by side for anyone to do their own comparisons.

I think it’s always interesting to hear other artists’ interpretations/renditions of songs that mostly everyone knows.  In this case it’s exceptionally interesting.  Be sure to read the little synopsis of the making of the song.  Enjoy!

Google Me

Author: jimmy
POSTED AT 04:06 PM

There are rumors flying around like crazy that Google is planning to launch a social network that will rival Facebook in the very near future.  It all started when Digg founder Kevin Rose tweeted the message below:

At the moment both Google and Facebook are not commenting on this speculation.  It is worth noting though that Facebook is rumored to be dabbling in the search engine market for their own.  This is a clear move into Google’s territory.  Perhaps Google finds that fighting offense with offense is the way to go here.

Also, a new social network launch from Google could not come at a better time given the recent user dissatisfaction with Facebook’s privacy settings.

Other rumors are stating that Google Me would combine Google’s Buzz, Wave and Orkut social networking features into one social network to rule them all.  Not to mention - an instant user base of about 200 million people too.

Of course, at the moment this is all hearsay.  However, this doesn’t stop us from wondering and asking the questions - will it succeed or will it fail?

What do you guys think?

Facebook’s New Privacy Settings

Author: jimmy
POSTED AT 03:05 PM

Facebook has rolled out some new privacy settings today in hopes to put their millions of users’ minds at ease.  Also, maybe to shut a few people up, but that’s wishful thinking.

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said the new settings will give users “one simple tool” to control how their information is shared - with friends only, with friends of friends or with everyone.  “All of the controls we had are still there if you want to use them,” Mr. Zuckerberg said. “But we just wanted to make it easy for people who want to put themselves in one bucket very easily with just a couple of clicks.”

Basically, the privacy page got redesigned so that it’s no longer confusing AND controversial.  For example, a single click will now let users block all of their information from being accessed by third parties, such as game or application developers.  In the past, users had to go on a little treasure hunt to find and turn off this setting.  Applications will also have “dramatically less access to your information by default” according to Zuckerberg.

Another noteworthy change - the information that is shown when someone searches for your name is now different.  In the past, Facebook would show your name, gender, hometown, activities, profile photo and networks.  Hometown and activities will now be private.

The controls are definitely more simple but unfortunately not private by default. You still have to seek out privacy settings and change them if you care about controlling who sees what.

If you’re too lazy to do that or don’t really care about all this privacy nonsense you can opt to use facebook’s “recommended” settings.  Judging from their track record I’m sure they’ll have good recommendations.

Twilight Soundtrack Promotion

Author: jimmy
POSTED AT 10:05 AM

The artists on the latest Twilight Soundtrack are currently being revealed one at a time for the next 7 hours on Myspace.  The social networking site will be releasing the artists’ names every 30 minutes until the roster is complete.

I personally think this is a really cool and innovative way to generate buzz on a soundtrack that already has more buzz than a bee (yes, that was just said).

The Twilight soundtracks have become a force to be reckoned with and have already cemented their status as the “who’s who” in the popular/indie/cool music scene.

Check out the soundtrack list HERE.

Facebook Showcase

Author: jimmy
POSTED AT 10:04 PM

A Facebook Fan page is one of the many ways for fans to stay connected with you.  More and more artists are recognizing the importance of a fan page.  They are going beyond the standard lackluster fan page look and feel to create pages that fans actually enjoy using and interacting with.

I have recently been browsing through the The Facebook Showcase blog to see what other artists, brands and businesses are doing to pimp out their fan pages.  There are tons of great ideas and examples of excellent page designs there.

One of the more notable fan pages (and also one that Oniracom designed!) can be found in the Celebrity and/or Enterainment categories - Lenny Kravitz!  The Facebook Showcase describes the page as having “a nice tab promoting his new tour dates”.  You can check out Lenny’s fan page here and “like it”!

Everyone knows (at least we hope) that as an Artist, building a solid email list is one of the most important things you can do to build and maintain your relationship with your fans.

A sound email list will turn your current fan base into an extremely solid one.  The relationship that you foster with your fans, keeping them up to date on the latest news and them getting to know you even better is what’s going to build their loyalty and help you become even more successful.

Oniracom recently created and implemented an email list marketing campaign to increase the number of subscribers for G. Love and Special Sauce.

When designing the campaign we made sure we followed these 3 simple rules:

  • Give fans incentive to sign up to the mailing list
  • Promote the mailing list; feature it everywhere to increase it’s visibility
  • Keep it simple for fans to sign up; don’t make it too complicated

By employing these 3 tactics and using a little Oniracom creative magic, we were able to grow G. Love’s mailing list numbers at a phenomenal rate.  As might be expected, the mailing list continues to grow at this rate.

The case study below details our strategy and the step-by-step process we used to create this unique campaign.  This case study among many others can also be found on our website - www.oniracom.com

During a recent show in Charlotte, Ben Folds pioneered a new element into his live show - spontaneous song writing inspired by people met via Chatroulette.com

For those of you who don’t know what Chatroulette is, it’s a website that pairs random strangers for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online chat (video, audio and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection.

Folds placed his computer on his piano, hooked it up to the big screen and proceeded to let the games begin.  What followed was comedic bliss and great musicianship in it’s finest form.  Check it out!
